Cluster University Jammu 1st Semester Biochemistry Cell Biology Previous Year Question Paper
The Previous Year Question Paper of Cell Biology in the 1st semester Biochemistry programme at Cluster University Jammu is considered the most visually rich and conceptually foundational paper that every life-science student encounters. Conducted for 3 hours and carrying 70 marks (plus 30 marks practical/internal), it beautifully blends structural biology with biochemical functions. Section A consists of 10–12 compulsory objective/diagram-based questions on differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plasma membrane models, and organelle identification. Section B contains 5–6 medium-length questions requiring labelled diagrams and functions of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, nucleus, and cytoskeleton. Section C presents 3–4 long-answer questions that demand detailed explanations with neat hand-drawn diagrams on topics such as fluid mosaic model, active & passive transport mechanisms, cell signalling pathways (GPCR, RTK), cell cycle checkpoints, mitosis–meiosis stages, apoptosis vs necrosis, and cancer biochemistry (oncogenes, tumour suppressors). Diagrams alone can fetch 8–10 extra marks if properly labelled and proportionate. Students who solve the last 7–10 years’ papers develop extraordinary diagrammatic speed and accuracy, enabling them to complete the paper 30–40 minutes early and revise. Toppers scoring 90+ marks maintain a personal “Diagram Bank” of 50+ standard cell biology figures. This question paper is therefore not just an examination — it is a complete visual biochemistry textbook in itself. Mastering it gives students lifelong skills to interpret electron micrographs, understand drug targets, and crack competitive exams like GATE-Life Sciences, CSIR-NET, ICMR-JRF, and DBT-BET. Practising it repeatedly converts a beginner who struggles to draw a cell into a confident biologist ready to handle advanced courses like Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Genetic Engineering from the very next semester. Cell Biology (Course Code generally BCH-103C or equivalent) is a 4-credit Core Course (Theory 4 + Practical 2) under the NEP-2020 curriculum of Cluster University Jammu. The syllabus is structured into four units ensures progressive understanding from basic structure to advanced cellular processes. Unit I: Cell – An Overview & Plasma Membrane (15 marks) → Discovery of cell, cell theory, prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells; ultra-structure and functions of plasma membrane; fluid mosaic model (Singer-Nicolson); membrane proteins, lipid raft; transport across membrane — simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport (Na+/K+ ATPase), ion channels, endocytosis, exocytosis; osmosis and tonicity. Unit II: Cell Organelles – Structure & Functions (20 marks) → Detailed structure and functions of endoplasmic reticulum (RER & SER), Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, glyoxysomes; mitochondria (structure, chemiosmotic theory, mtDNA); nucleus (nuclear envelope, pore complex, nucleolus); ribosomes, cytoskeleton (microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments); centrioles and basal bodies. Unit III: Cell Cycle, Division & Cell Death (18 marks) → Phases of cell cycle, regulation (cyclins & CDKs), checkpoints (G1/S, G2/M, spindle); mitosis & meiosis stages with diagrams; cytokinesis; programmed cell death — apoptosis vs necrosis, biochemical markers (caspases, Bcl-2 family); cancer biology — hallmarks of cancer, oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes (p53, Rb). Unit IV: Cell Signalling & Extracellular Matrix (17 marks) → Types of signalling (autocrine, paracrine, endocrine); G-protein coupled receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, second messengers (cAMP, IP3/DAG, Ca²⁺); MAPK pathway; extracellular matrix components (collagen, fibronectin, integrins); cell adhesion molecules. Examination Scheme: • Theory: 70 marks (Section A: 10×1 = 10 compulsory; Section B: 5/7 × 6 = 30 short answers with diagrams; Section C: 3/5 × 10 = 30 long answers) • Internal Assessment: 20 marks (tests + seminar + attendance) • Practical: 30 marks (microscopy, micrometry, cell counting, mitotic index, permanent slides identification, viva) Practical Component (Compulsory): 1. Study of cell structure through compound microscope 2. Micrometry and cell size measurement 3. Mitosis/meiosis slide preparation & identification 4. Blood smear preparation & differential leucocyte count 5. Buccal epithelial cell smear for Barr body Recommended Books: 1. Molecular Biology of the Cell – Bruce Alberts (6th/7th Ed.) 2. The Cell: A Molecular Approach – Geoffrey M. Cooper 3. Cell and Molecular Biology – Gerald Karp 4. Cell Biology – C.B. Powar Preparation Strategy: Practise at least 50 labelled diagrams, make flowcharts of signalling pathways, revise cell cycle regulation daily, and solve previous 8–10 years’ papers with strict time limit. This course lays the foundation for all advanced life-science subjects and competitive examinations. (548 words)
