Cluster University Jammu 1st Semester Botany Elementary Botany I Previous Year Question Paper
The Previous Year Question Paper of “Elementary Botany-I” in the 1st semester at Cluster University Jammu is the most foundational and diagram-rich paper that every botany student remembers throughout their entire career. This 3-hour, 70-mark paper (plus 30 marks practical) beautifully introduces the fascinating world of plants. Section A contains compulsory short questions on plant cell ultra-structure, tissue systems, and differences between prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells. Section B tests detailed structure, types, and functions of meristems, parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem, phloem, and epidermal tissue system. Section C carries long, diagram-based questions such as “T.S. of dicot & monocot root, stem, and leaf with labelled diagrams”, “Structure of plant cell & its organelles”, “Ergastic substances and secretory tissues”, and “Anomalous secondary growth in Boerhaavia & Dracaena”. Diagrams alone can fetch 15–20 extra marks if neat and proportionate. Students who solve the last 8–10 years’ papers develop lightning-fast diagrammatic skills and score 90+ easily. Toppers maintain a personal “Diagram Atlas” of 100+ standard labelled figures. This question paper is therefore not just an exam — it is the ultimate foundation for CSIR-NET Life Sciences, GATE-Biotechnology, JKSSB Botany Lecturer/Forestry, BSI Scientist-B, and all higher plant science courses. Practising it repeatedly converts a fresher who can’t draw a cell into a confident botanist ready to tackle Anatomy, Physiology, and Taxonomy from the very next semester. (332 words)

Elementary Botany-I (Course Code usually BOT-102C or Major-101) is a 4-credit Core Course (Theory 4 + Practical 2) under NEP-2020 at Cluster University Jammu, focusing on plant cell, tissues, and basic anatomy. Unit-wise Syllabus & Marks Distribution: Unit I: Plant Cell & Cell Wall (15 marks) → Ultra-structure of plant cell; differences from animal cell; cell wall chemistry & growth; plastids (chloroplast, chromoplast, leucoplast); mitochondria, ER, Golgi, ribosomes, vacuoles, nucleus; ergastic substances (starch, aleurone, raphides, cystoliths). Unit II: Tissue Systems (20 marks) → Meristematic tissues – classification, theories (Apical cell, Histogen, Tunica-Corpus); permanent tissues – simple (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) & complex (xylem, phloem); secretory tissues (glands, laticifers, resin canals). Unit III: Primary Structure of Root, Stem & Leaf (20 marks) → T.S. of dicot & monocot root, stem, leaf; epidermal tissue system (stomata types, trichomes); mechanical tissue distribution; vascular bundles – types & arrangement. Unit IV: Secondary Growth & Anomalous Structure (15 marks) → Normal secondary growth in dicot root & stem (vascular cambium, cork cambium); periderm, lenticels; heartwood-sapwood; anomalous secondary growth – Boerhaavia, Bignonia, Dracaena, Nyctanthes. Examination Scheme: • Theory: 70 marks (Section A: 10×1 = 10 compulsory; Section B: 5/7 × 6 = 30 short answers; Section C: 3/5 × 10 = 30 long answers with diagrams) • Internal Assessment: 20 marks (tests + assignment + attendance) • Practical: 30 marks (microscopic slides, temporary mounts, viva) Practical Component (Compulsory): 1. Study of plant cell through temporary mount 2. T.S. of dicot & monocot root, stem, leaf 3. Identification of simple & complex tissues 4. Anomalous secondary growth slides 5. Maceration of wood elements Recommended Books: 1. College Botany Vol. I – Gangulee, Das & Datta 2. Plant Anatomy – B.P. Pandey 3. Esau’s Plant Anatomy – Evert & Eichhorn 4. A Textbook of Botany – Singh, Pande & Jain Preparation Strategy: Practise 100+ labelled diagrams, revise tissue distribution daily, make comparison tables (dicot vs monocot), solve last 10 years’ papers with timer. This course is the backbone of all higher botany papers and competitive examinations. (548 words)
