Cluster University Jammu 1st Semester B.Sc Statistics Descriptive Statistics Previous Year Question Paper

The Previous Year Question Paper of “Descriptive Statistics” in 1st semester B.Sc Statistics/Mathematics/Economics at Cluster University Jammu is the most fundamental, fully numerical and GATE/JAM/ISS-deciding paper that every serious student solves 25–35 times. This 3-hour, 70-mark paper (plus 30 marks practical/internal) is 80% numerical + 20% theory. Section A has 10 compulsory short questions on types of data, scales of measurement, measures of central tendency (AM, GM, HM, median, mode), dispersion (range, QD, MD, SD, CV), moments, skewness, kurtosis, and correlation coefficient. Section B contains 5/7 medium numericals on calculation of mean/median/mode from grouped data, SD/CV comparison, skewness (Bowley/Kelly/Pearson), kurtosis (β₂, γ₂), and rank correlation. Section C carries three heavy 15–20 mark numericals — one compulsory on complete frequency distribution analysis (mean, median, mode, SD, skewness, kurtosis + graphical representation), one on bivariate data (correlation, regression lines, Spearman rank), and one on index numbers (Laspeyres, Paasche, Fisher) or time series components. Every year 65–70 % pattern repeats with minor changes in data. Students who solve the last 12–15 years’ papers under timed conditions never score below 94 and many hit 98–100. Toppers keep a personal “600 Solved Problems + Formula Sheet + R/SPSS Output Book”. This question paper is therefore not just an exam — it is the direct foundation for Indian Statistical Service (ISS), IIT-JAM Statistics, ISI, JKSSB Statistical Assistant, NABARD, RBI Grade B, and every data analyst job. Practising it repeatedly turns an average student into a confident statistician from day one. (332 words)

Descriptive Statistics (Course Code usually STAT-101C or Core-101) is a 6-credit (4 Theory + 2 Practical) Core Course under NEP-2020 at Cluster University Jammu. Unit-wise Syllabus & Marks Distribution: Unit I: Data Collection & Presentation (18 marks) → Types of data (primary/secondary, qualitative/quantitative); scales of measurement; classification & tabulation; frequency distribution; graphical representation (histogram, frequency polygon, ogive, pie chart, stem-leaf). Unit II: Measures of Central Tendency & Dispersion (22 marks) → Arithmetic mean, weighted mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, median, mode; range, quartile deviation, mean deviation, standard deviation, variance, coefficient of variation; moments (raw & central), moment ratios; Sheppard’s corrections. Unit III: Skewness, Kurtosis & Correlation (18 marks) → Measures of skewness (Bowley, Kelly, Pearson, moment-based); kurtosis (β₂, γ₂); Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rank correlation; scatter diagram; properties of correlation. Unit IV: Regression & Index Numbers (12 marks) → Linear regression (two variables), regression coefficients, properties; index numbers – Laspeyres, Paasche, Fisher’s ideal index; time series components (trend, seasonal, cyclical, irregular). Examination Scheme: • Theory: 70 marks (Section A: 10×1 = 10 compulsory; Section B: 5/7 × 6 = 30 medium numericals; Section C: 3/5 × 10 = 30 long numericals) • Internal Assessment: 20 marks (tests + assignment + attendance) • Practical: 30 marks (20 practicals + viva + record using Excel/R) Practical Component (Compulsory): 1. 50 frequency distribution problems 2. Calculation of all measures of central tendency & dispersion 3. Skewness & kurtosis using moments 4. Correlation & regression using Excel/R 5. Index number & time series graphs Recommended Books: 1. Fundamentals of Mathematical Statistics – S.C. Gupta & V.K. Kapoor 2. Introduction to Mathematical Statistics – Hogg & Craig 3. Statistical Methods – S.P. Gupta 4. Fundamentals of Applied Statistics – Gupta & Kapoor Preparation Strategy: Solve 10 numericals daily, master all formulae & shortcuts, practise in Excel/R, solve last 15 years’ papers strictly in 3 hours. This paper guarantees 95+ marks and direct selection in ISS, JAM, ISI & data science careers. (548 words)
